Celebrating Wisdom and Longevity: Honoring The Village’s Centenarians

Centenarians

John Knox Village is home to 16 remarkable residents who have either reached or are nearing 100 years of age. These residents embody the wisdom, perseverance, and strength that come with living through a century of monumental changes. While some haven’t quite reached the milestone, they are close, and their lives are full of stories, accomplishments, and lessons we can all learn from.

Did you know there are approximately 90,000 Americans who are over 100 years old?
That’s a number worth celebrating, especially when we think about the countless experiences and insights these individuals have to share. From witnessing technological revolutions to living through global events that reshaped society, their journeys offer a rich source of wisdom.

The centenarians at John Knox Village have many similar secrets to longevity — staying active, maintaining strong family ties, being involved in the community, and eating well. The Village is proud to offer a wide range of opportunities that can support these long, fulfilling lives.

A Village of Longevity and Wellness

Living at John Knox Village, residents enjoy the benefits of a community that prioritizes holistic well-being, focusing on the dimensions of wellness: social, physical, spiritual, intellectual, and occupational.

The Village provides lots of opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active, learn new things, and connect with others. Anthony Columbatto, Vice President of Health and Community Services, has recently presented on the key components that contribute to longevity. He emphasizes the importance of three main pillars: exercise, nutrition, and sleep.

“At the Village, we have many resources for residents to help them focus on wellness and living a healthy lifestyle,” Anthony said. “We have many professionals here, including physical and occupational therapists, fitness instructors, a dietitian, and more who are wonderful resources to help our residents age successfully. It is so exciting to honor and recognize Village residents who have reached such a wonderful milestone.”

Secrets to a Long Life: Words of Wisdom from Our Centenarians

We asked some of our centenarians their secrets to living a long life. Their responses highlight the simplicity of enjoying life and the importance of family, staying active, and always learning. Here’s what they had to say:

Village Care Center:

  • Richard Davenport, 99: “I think I’m lucky to have lived this long life.”
  • Dave Barker, 99: “Have fun and do things to keep yourself active.”
  • Lois Anderson, 99: “Keep learning new things.”
  • Opel Maben, 101: “Just live each day as they come.”
  • Katherine Lehnebach, 102: “Live each day to the fullest because they go by so fast.”

Independent Living:

  • Margaret Neal, 101: “I don’t know what the secret is. The Lord only knows. I know I’ve lived a good life.”
  • Ken Wentworth, 99: “A happy family and having grandchildren.”
  • Dorothy Miller, 99: “Helping others and being glad I could help. I love my children and my family.”
  • Margaret Rindom, 101: “I walked a lot, I didn’t smoke, and I loved to ballroom dance. I still really can’t believe it myself that I’m 100.”

Village Assisted Living:

  • Juanita Ripley, 100: “I really don’t know; I just live one day at a time. I am thankful for my 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.”
  • Helga Davis, 99: “I didn’t expect to live this long. I try to enjoy life and keep doing things I like to do. I still read, enjoy having meals with others. With the support here, it’s easy to live here.”

These quotes remind us that each person’s journey is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to longevity. What they do share, though, is the common experience of staying engaged with life and those around them.
