Finding New Passions: Resident Jo Gipe Takes the Stage at John Knox Village
Set to perform in her third play since moving to the Village more than two years ago, Jo Gipe never expected acting to become a new passion in her retirement. But now, she’s having the time of her life as part of the John Knox Village Community Theatre.
“I think for me, the best part are the rehearsals,” Jo said. “We have a great time laughing and teasing each other when we mess up lines. It’s just a great camaraderie that we build.”
Jo recalls how nervous she felt before her first performance. The hours she spent at home rehearsing her lines, with the help of her daughter, paid off. For Jo, part of the joy in performing comes from the deep trust and reliance she and her fellow actors have in each other. Under the direction of Village resident Pat Clement, the cast works together seamlessly, and the atmosphere is filled with support and encouragement.
“I really didn’t think in retirement that I would take up acting, but here I am doing it and having a great time,” Jo shared. “I love how it keeps me active, and it challenges me in so many ways, like memorizing lines, and it just gets me out of my comfort zone.”
A Creative Outlet and A Strong Sense of Camaraderie
Jo’s experience with John Knox Village Community Theatre exemplifies the exciting opportunities available to residents. Through theatre, Jo has found more than just a fun hobby —she’s found a creative outlet that helps her stay engaged, mentally sharp, and physically active.
The challenge of memorizing lines, staying in character, and performing for an audience offers personal growth and rewards that she hadn’t expected to discover in retirement.
But just as important as the performances are the friendships and bonds she’s built along the way. Jo describes the rehearsals as light-hearted, filled with laughter, and a space where everyone supports each other. These shared experiences have created a lasting camaraderie among the cast members, a bond that makes each performance more enjoyable.
